I usually don't put up sketches for various reasons, but what the hell?

I compiled a lot more than what I have here, all from different places - old files of character art, blah blah etc. On top of that, I will probably compile a bunch of really old ones from different lost corners of the internet to post too.

Also, I still feel bad that I never finished that barbarian up there. He was going to be killing a 3 headed snake on a volcanic crag or something like that. I just had no idea what to do with his face.

Fan-related Silliness

It's been a while! Have a few pieces of fan stuff. First one is a drawing of some Pokemon (yes, really.) drawn quite a while ago, and the second is the Courier that I'm using in Fallout: New Vegas. There are more updates to come. I'm working on a Tumblr format currently, and as for personal work I'm getting some good stuff on track, so keep an eye out in the coming months. :)

Just a quick warm-up from the other day at a friend's place. If I'd had reference I would have given him some kind of cool blues guitar or something. Still like the drawing though.

Playing with dark brown inks lately rather than the light ones. I tend to get a bit irritated while inking, so I'm hoping to play around and find ways to make it more fun. :)

So, first off, I want to say that I have no idea when or if I will be uploading more of these to the internet. This is a preview for that thing I've been working on. You know the one. These five pages were actually done last year for my project pitch, and there are definitely more than this sitting around on the sidelines. ;)

The reason I stopped on the one-shot before was because it just wasn't working out. It was out of context, not particularly well written (even when I first made it), and something about doing this as a weekly web series just didn't sit right with me. And though it's debatable whether or not THIS story is well-written, at least it's organized and plotted out to a final stage that I'm happy with. :)

Chainsmoke is a 3 part character-driven story about the misadventures of that skinny dude there, Ralph Spencer. Well... it's more than that, truthfully. But you'll have to wait and see. It contains a pretty wide gamut of content - horror, comedy, fantasy, cheesy science... Everything I love and hate is going into this as I work through as much of it as I can this year.

I hope that you guys will enjoy seeing a small portion of it while I finish working on my current project!

Hello blog, I've been neglecting you in favor of other, more important things. Firstly, you should head over and check out Everywhere by Chris Miskiewicz. It's a cool sci-fi/horror anthology about suddenly animals appearing everywhere by the billions!

Now, onto the art! Please accept this huge update from various places around the internet. It is largely character art.

From a figure drawing session that I went to a while back. This was a 20 minute pose, and the nicest out of all of the drawings that night. :)

I love designing spaceships. Could do it all day.

Below is a character belonging to Dirk Schulz who draws The SWEFS web comic. This one is technically from one of his other ideas, but you should check out SWEFS anyway!

My dude Hono in mushrooms, which are another thing I could draw all day long.

I have always hated drawing from photos and prefer real life over it 100%, but sometimes the brain just craves observation, and there's no one around to oblige. It's like an unfortunate exercise in redundancy, or like taking notes in school, (where's the creativity??) so I could never call something like this a finished piece and feel good about it. Even so, I guess I liked it anyway and thought it would look pretty funny next to the cartoon drawing above.

24 Hour Comic

Well, it's penciled at least! Finished before the 24 hours was up by about 1 and a half hours.

I'm only posting a preview of one page for now because I'd like to save updates on it for when I can get around to finishing the pages in the coming months. Might be slow going though, because it's kind of taking side-project status in the wake of a couple other things.

In any case, this "comic" came out rather bizarre, but it was fun as hell! Tentative title is "Journey to the Sun". :)

This first one is Ralph and the crew of the El Roacho from my Chainsmoke story. :)

Finished this a while back, but never posted for some reason or another. I would like to do a big pin-up of all the characters at some point!

This next one was my part of the start of what was to be a pretty epic collaboration between myself and another artist last year. Found it while organizing some of my image folders, and wanted to share it since it's about a thousand kinds of weird and it was really fun to make. It's also easy to see why I don't normally use black ink.

Been busy lately! Lots of stuff going on, which I hope to be able to show more of before too much time passes. Though I don't want to promise anything since I tend to back out of sharing most of the time. In the meantime, here's a recent color sketch:

I always feel that a lot of my older drawings are more spontaneous and lively, so I've been trying to get back into that mindset.

Back from SDCC! What a blast! The trip was so worthwhile and I met a lot of great people! So I've come back with a pretty huge art post! To start off, how about some panels from the comic pages I've been working on huh? ;D I've enjoyed working on these a lot and am going to continue to plug through them. The only downside to this is that it may yet be a while before you guys see the end of the story I was working on previously before I jumped over to this one. But eh! I like this one better anyway.

Next up, my friend Mario drew this awesome Derek in a kind of impromptu art trade we did at the hotel one night! Below it is an in-flight doodle of his characters Wyliman and McKenn from his comic!

Sorry for the further absence, but I've made myself a private practice blog and might camp out there for a bit. I am PROBABLY taking a class pretty soon because I'm so frustrated with how my work looks and with how the comic pages are coming out too. Yeah, yeah, we're our own worst critics, but it's important to have a realistic assessment of one's skill too and I think/hope that this will help me out a lot. I guess, where I am right now with it, isn't exactly where I want to be (is it ever?). I haven't been in a classroom for a while and am pretty excited for it. Moreover, having a place to get input on this stuff before I embarrass myself showing or sending anything around, pretty much makes my YEAR.

In What I'm Doing news: I'm putting something small together and working on writing. I have NOT dropped the comic, and am still plugging through pages, but probably won't post them until I'm A) enough ahead of a weekly schedule and B) happy with the art. And I mean, since I'm not doing this for anyone but me right now, what the hell right? In other words, it's on hold until further notice.

Will have drawings to post soon! :)

And what a haggard little man he is! Just like every page, I take issue with a lot of things on it, but overall pretty happy with this one and I think I'm finally starting to settle into something that actually works.

[Edit: In retrospect, MAN that pen was a bad idea. Ha ha! Good lesson in when/how to experiment and conversely, how NOT to.]

If your monitor is too dark you may not see the ripples. Anyway, kinda liked the drawing and thought I'd share. Man, I miss drawing oddball weird stuff. The story I'm doing right now doesn't have pretty much any written into it (you know... besides just being weird for what it is already), but the next Chainsmoke story, "Battery", I'm happy to say is more balanced out between the goofy and serious.

Kind of a personal one here, but I'd been thinking about it all day and all yesterday too.

But you know, sometimes I do stupid things, say stupid things, act ridiculously, get anxious over nothing, make tons of mistakes. I have silly ideas, and opinions not everyone agrees with. I try WAY too hard not to blunder socially. And there is sure a hell of a lot in the world I don't understand.

But when I sit down to draw, none of that bullshit matters anymore. I get so enthralled and excited by the idea that every day I get to wake up and tell stories about whatever I want for the rest of my days, to enjoy the world and entertain, whether anyone else likes it or not. And that hasn't changed since I was 6 years old and found out someone could actually grow up to do that.

Even if I still have a lot to learn about myself and the world, I'm glad to have art as my anchor.

Doing February Draw-Every-Day Challenge again this year! Started the month off pretty weak, so I won't post the previous 3 days of drawings. At first, I thought I'd do it off to the side and post quickie doodles, but fuck that. So instead I'm going to do the opposite and push the hell out of my drawings every goddamn day like I'm already doing with the comic. So this one's from today:

Big Post of Harley Gunsavior!

So I figured while I was doing a ton with Chainsmoke and posting the first page in a couple days, I'd be completely non-sensical and post stuff from a story that has NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.

Harley Gunsavior (named for the obnoxious-looking main character in the red jacket there) is supposed to be kind of a happier, light-hearted story about growing up and finding a place in the world. It fits into the same universe as Chainsmoke, but the respective tone and atmosphere of the two stories are very different.

Anyway, here's some concept/character art for it, since no one's really seen much from it. I'll post the finish of this first image when it's done at some point. The other three are not recent (bottom one being the one of the first drawings of Harley I ever did), but I hope you enjoy them anyway!

Hey all! Comic start date is February 2nd! It's a one-shot and kind of the "pilot episode" for the bigger series that I want to pitch.

I'm not sure how I want to go about updating them here on the blog since I don't want the continuity to be broken up by getting scrolled off the front page or by being punctuated in between by unrelated entries. Obviously a real website would be ideal and one is in the works.

In the meantime, if anyone reads this and has ideas about how I could go about updating comic pages smoothly on blogspot, feel free to comment!

I'm not sure who here reads John K's blog and who doesn't, but if you don't and happen to stop by here, he's got a couple really great posts up about character design:

It really hits on something I've been struggling with in my work for ages now, which will be obvious to just about anyone who knows my stuff: and that is drawing tons and tons of aimless, uninspired character art. It's really the biggest thing that's ever stifled me from becoming the truly versatile, functional artist that I've always wanted to be. Dudes standing in space, bodyless heads in voids... I'm doing a lot to change this with the comic that only a couple of you have seen, but nonetheless it still bothers me. Haha, I don't know. I loved reading what he had to say and it's given me a lot to think about and provided some good direction! Hopefully I'll be able to put it to use. : )

Here are a couple doodles and tests with pens, inking and watercolor. I'm trying to re-teach myself a bunch of things in a very short period of time. Haha! Only time and results will tell if it's successful or not! But the biggest thing? I REALLY need to cool it on the technical stuff. It's fun, but my art isn't CRAZY enough for my own liking.

I hope to be able to post some comic previews in the next couple weeks! Short one-shot comics will start up probably late January of 2010 if I can get everything set and ready.

As much as I'd like to get both comics out in some form by New Year's I think I'm going to put "Ohlie Day" on hold for now and switch my focus exclusively onto the proposal (and the smaller projects for other people). It's more important and there will probably be plenty of waiting time after it's sent out where I can then concentrate on smaller stand-alone comics for a bit. :)

This one is a progress on an art trade I'm doing with GloomyUnderwoods on Deviantart. Kevin belongs to her, Ralph is of course mine. I was kind of itching for some character interaction and I have a cool idea for the lighting in this one!

Back from Illuxcon -- AWESOME time. Everyone there is sweet as well as just damn brilliant! Hell of a learning experience too! Seeing all that amazing work and asking questions has lead me to a lot of rethinking of how I'm going about my own art.

That said, I did 3 pages of drawings today, including some observational work and will likely continue along that vein for the rest of the week along with finishing up some backgrounds for a friend as well as my own comic work. I'll be sure to post the best stuff at the end of the week. :)

Off to Illuxcon + some art

So I'm off to Illuxcon with Mat and Zack for the weekend to talk to illustrators, look at awesome paintings, try to get ourselves out into the art world, and just generally relax! Definitely attending as many lectures as possible!

In the meantime here's some art -- I've been drawing like a lunatic getting comic work done plus art trades, and just general doodling. Most of this is already uploaded around other websites, but this first one is a progress page from my comic, Chainsmoke! I'll upload more stuff when I get back. :) Enjoy!

Gah! So much going on lately. Can I finish a 3-8 page comic in 5 days? WE SHALL SOON SEE! At the very least it should be written and penciled by the beginning of August.

Anyway, have some drawings: Character art of my little green science guy, Derek, for one of my portfolios (sorry it's a photo -- the new scanner isn't picking up bright colors very well), and a willow tree drawn with some new markers I got, which unfortunately had to be adjusted in photoshop.

Yo! Sorry for the extended silence here guys. I'm just waiting on my new scanner to arrive. Got tired of the photographs.

In any case, I've really gotten my ass in gear making some finished work these past few days and am excited about how a lot of it is coming out. Just having fun, putting my best foot forward no holds barred and not wasting my time and energy worrying worth jackshit about time taken or what supposedly comes out "good" and what "doesn't".

I love art and have dragged my feet long enough for no good reason that I can think of. There's no excuse as to why I shouldn't be using my connections and getting work by now.

Watch for stuff to start up again in the next week or so and then continue regularly afterwards!

So, I joined the February Draw Every Day Challenge over at the forum there, and I have to say that as a result, and this is probably a good thing, I have not in a long time been so angrily disgusted with my own work. This month my intention is to take it all way way up, closer to where I know the work needs to be. That means drawing double-time what I normally do, and using as much of the forgotten knowledge that I can from everyone who's ever had something to teach me. I know some people would laugh and say that it's "stupid" to hold myself to such high, unattainable standards, but really, that's how I keep myself going.

Today was good stuff!

Started out by finishing this gift for a new friend from Deviantart. These are her characters Edgar and Reynard. You can check out her stuff over at http://quaidezmaster.deviantart.com I'm such a nerd for cartoons.

Then started a trade with THE AMAZING ANNERS, who's blog is accessible over in my sidebar there. This is her feller Shenanigan eating happy ice cream under happy ice cream tree! Will post the finish tomorrow.

She was fast as fucking THOR'S LIGHTNING with her half though! OH man it's so cool too!

Then ended the day FANTASTICALLY by making retarded manga avatars of our characters with NEIL. HERE, HAVE SOME "MANGATARDS", as he so aptly put it.

Was thinking on one of my old, sillier concepts from a while back and came upon a way to make it work for submission to a particular place! BWAA HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Not going to reveal anything just yet since I only just rekindled the fire for this thing, but oh, if I can pull it off, it's gonna be GOLD, my friends. GOLD. Hopefully the concept in and of itself is not grounds for immediate rejection from EVERYWHERE, but we'll see, now won't we?

Have some art, ya buncha lilly-livered no-goodniks! This is a small amount of the massive backlog of art that I have not uploaded anywhere since like July/August (and maybe even before that? Not sure). So, there's a mix of old and new here.

And to Neil and Allison: next time I'll try to post something HAVEN'T seen. Haha!

A redesign of a really really really really OLD character. Curtis is pretty much the late 80's-early 90's incarnate. He looks like his name should be Vinny or something.

This is also very recent. The concept isn't very interesting, but I thought the drawings would be nice to share.

Character lineup that I'm too timid to color for now. Maybe later.

Like many of these, this piece went into my portfolio. Looking at it now it's become a sort of landmark for a lot of mistakes I don't want to make again. Scanned this on a few different scanners, and each time the color was killed.

Welcome to my trash heap--I MEAN SKETCH "BLOG". I'm a big fan of film, animation, comics and cartoons of all kinds and I hope to fill this thing with my art, art that I like (maybe even art that I hate, but that's probably just asking for trouble), thoughts on the industries and their trends (be they truth or ignorance), updates on my personal projects, and other this-and-that's --- whatever comes to mind really.
